Who we are
yearn began with a simple frustration: too much hotel writing is written for the booking funnel, not for the reader. We set out to do the opposite. Every hotel in our collection is chosen because it does something remarkable — a building worth the journey, a service culture that anticipates rather than reacts, or a location that could not be replicated anywhere else.
We are a small, independent studio. We are not owned by a hotel group, a booking platform or an advertising network. That independence is the whole point: it is what allows us to write a rating we can defend, and to describe a hotel as plainly as we can.
Our work sits somewhere between travel journalism and design criticism. We care about the marble as much as the mattress, the arrival as much as the amenities, and the quiet details that separate a good stay from one you remember for years.
What we believe
- Place over polish. A hotel earns its place in the collection by belonging to where it is — not by importing a generic idea of luxury.
- Craft is legible. Good architecture, strong service and thoughtful design can be described and compared, not merely admired.
- Independence is non-negotiable. No hotel can pay for inclusion, a higher score or a place on the cover.
- Restraint reads as respect. We would rather publish ten careful entries than a hundred hasty ones.
How we curate
Each edition begins with a long list assembled from fieldwork, reader suggestions and our own travel. Candidates are then assessed against six criteria, weighted equally:
- Architecture and design — originality, craftsmanship, and how well the building responds to its setting.
- Service — the warmth, precision and instinct of the people who run the house.
- Sense of place — food, materials, rituals and detail drawn from the surrounding culture.
- Rooms and comfort — light, proportion, sound, and the quality of rest.
- Signature experiences — the one or two things you can only do here.
- Responsibility — environmental practice, community ties and how the hotel treats its staff.
A hotel must be strong across all six to be shortlisted. Where a property is exceptional but uneven, we say so explicitly rather than smoothing over the difficulty.
The rating, explained
Each hotel receives a single score out of ten. The number is a summary of our editors' judgement after assessment; it is not a price indicator and not a popularity measure.
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 9.0 – 10 | Exceptional — among the finest stays on earth. |
| 8.0 – 8.9 | Outstanding — a benchmark for its category. |
| 7.0 – 7.9 | Excellent — clearly above the very high bar of the collection. |
| 6.0 – 6.9 | Notable — a distinct character worth seeking out. |
| Below 6.0 | Not shortlisted for the collection. |
What we cover
The 2026 collection spans five regions — Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the Americas and the South Pacific — and a deliberately broad range of hotel types, from urban landmarks and historic palaces to hidden retreats and overwater villas.
- Cities and culture — harbour-side towers, art-led houses and design icons.
- Historic and heritage — colonial landmarks, palazzi and grand hotels with a story.
- Resorts and islands — beachfront, lagoon and mountain retreats built around nature.
- Quiet luxury — minimal, discreet houses where the service does the talking.
Editorial independence
yearn accepts no payment for editorial coverage. Hotels cannot buy a place in an edition, a score, or a portrait. Where we receive complimentary stays as part of research, we disclose it in the relevant entry, and a complimentary stay never guarantees inclusion. Any future commercial activity — for example, a clearly-labelled partnership — will be separated from editorial and marked as such.
Corrections and transparency
Hotels change. Rooms are refurbished, chefs move on, service cultures shift. When we learn that an entry no longer reflects a property, we revisit it. If you spot something that is out of date or incorrect, please write to us at our contact page and we will review it.
The team
The collection is produced by a small editorial group working remotely.
- Editorial director — sets the collection's point of view and final scores.
- Hotels editors — commission, report and write the individual entries.
- Photography editor — commissions and sequences imagery for each hotel.
- Research and standards — checks facts, disclosures and the rating record.
